Discovery: What did the fortune cookie mean?

CBS

During the first episode of season two of Star Trek: DIscovery, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) found a fortune cookie on the ready room floor. In it there was a message which read: “Not every cage is a prison, not every loss eternal”.

For those who need a quick refresher, Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs), kept a bowl of fortune cookies in his ready room as tribute to his family who used to make them on Earth centuries before.

The mirror version of Captain Lorca served aboard the USS Discovery and replaced the prime version of Lorca. The current whereabouts of the prime Captain Lorca is unknown. Towards the end of season one, Mirror Lorca was killed whilst in the mirror universe when he was hurtled into a ball of mycelial energy.

With the message, this could lead us to believe that mirror Lorca will return, and that he is trapped inside the Mycelium network. We've seen Paul Stemets (Anthony Rapp) travel in and out of the network, but we haven't seen anybody come back from the dead. We also saw a green spore land on Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman) at the end of the episode “What’s Past Is Prologue”. Could this also lead to Lorca’s return via Ensign Tilly in some way?

On Twitter, Jason Isaacs teased the following message:

For all those asking if mirror Lorca makes it, if he or prime Lorca will be in season 2 or if this is the end of the mirror universe in #StarTrekDiscovery, why would you trust me? I’ve been lying to you from the beginning!#BelieveMe #LiarInChief

Episode two is titled “New Eden” and is available on CBS All Access for US viewers on Thursday 24 January, with the rest of the world seeing it on Netflix at 08:00 GMT the following day.
